Did you know that electrical engineering is the discipline whose practitioners have been responsible for the design of CD-players, DVD-players, cellular telephones, high definition television, microprocessors, lasers, integrated circuits, and fiber optic links? These are just a few examples of the applications and problems whose fundamentals are studied in electrical engineering. What Do Electrical Engineering Graduates Do?
Electrical Engineers design all of our communications systems, electronic devices, computer hardware and medical equipment. In other words, they design and build the complex systems that drive the modern world and affect many aspects of our lives. Electrical Engineering graduates go on to work in a wide range of fields. Many work in engineering areas that include :- Communications Systems (The design and management of the hardware for communications networks, as well as all the advanced signal processing needed for data transmission across the Internet. This includes the wireless “cell phone” networks and optical fibre communications systems, as well as satellite systems and all that is needed to make these possible).
- The Design and Fabrication of Integrated Circuits (These include the microprocessors, memory chips, and other detailed electronics required to make a computer, but are found in every electronic device you have laid your hands on, in cars, and in the control systems used in factories and of robots).
- Avionics (The electronics for the control and navigation of aircraft).
- Medical Imaging Systems (The hardware to capture the information required to obtain an image, as well as the detailed signal processing needed to actually provide a recognizable image from the acquired data).
- Radars (Needed at all airports and in all ships and aircraft).
- Optoelectronics (The electronic optical devices such as lasers, LEDs and photodetectors that are used in optical communications systems, data storage such as DVDs, and in displays).
Something You Should Know About Choosing a Career
When choosing a career you should not simply examine the current statistics related to that career’s prospects. If you start your university studies now these figures will have changed by the time you graduate four years later anyway. What is established fact is that the need for electrical engineers has been one of those certainties over the years, simply because modern society cannot function without them. This demand remains even when technology trends change, since Electrical Engineering enables you to work in diverse areas and not just one specific area of industry. If you are looking for a solid rewarding career, one that can make it possible for you to wake up in the morning and be glad about going to work, then Electrical Engineering is the program of study for you. Your career will be both financially and intellectually rewarding, and seldom boring.Technology will expand and change rapidly throughout your career. The important thing is to obtain an engineering education that will not simply enable you to blindly use the latest electronic novelties, but to be able to understand in depth the significant developments in modern technology and be prepared to play a role in shaping its future. If this is the education you desire, then welcome to the Electrical Engineering program at the University of Ottawa.
Program and Courses Information
Our Electrical Engineering program is accredited by the Canadian Accreditation Engineering Board. This means that when you apply to register as a Professional Engineers you will be exempted from having to write the technical portions of the qualifying exams of the registering body.Follow this link to see the entire program description from the office of the registrar.
